Good news for free speech

Google just stuck up its middle finger at Communist China by declaring that it will no longer censor its search results within the country.

I think a likely outcome will be that Google is banned in China, but hopefully this will usher in a new wave of free speech movements within China, with the end goal of stopping censorship.  Only time will tell.

China is moving ahead on climate change

What are we doing? We're stuck debating healthcare, at a time when democrats have full control of the government. Just pass something and turn us into Switzerland. We'll live longer and spend less.

Now let's move onto climate change. Regardless of whether you believe that climate change is caused mostly by us or not (I do), consider this: oil will run out sooner or later, it is dirty on many levels, and there's a lot of money to be made coming up with technology to replace it. Would you rather have that tech developed in China or here? Here you say? Well, the only way to get that done is to pass massive taxes that will make energy so expensive in the US that it will be profitable to create version 1.0 of this technology.

One of my friends, reporting from China, has found that my blog is not accessible.

Hmm. Wonder why? Maybe articles like this and this.

Olympic Problems

The Chinese are cracking down on Tibet, months before the Summer Olympics.  Between 16 and 80 (depending on whom you believe) people were killed in riots.  China blocked access to youtube so other Chinese could not see images of the violence.  With the Olympics coming up, China does not its horrid human rights record to be dragged in front of the world stage, which is exactly what is happening.

But we can all rest assured that it won't rain on the olympics.  China says they can now control the weather.
