Moving on from the past in Israel

A former Israeli politician argues that his people must move on from the constant focus on the Holocaust as a basis for all reactions, and instead "embrace liberty and democracy." A fairly interesting article, one that I'm sure will provoke strong feelings on both sides.

As an outsider, I must say that I agree that Israel will eventually come to remember something without living it. But right now there are still survivors out there. It is very similar to slavery in the United States, but much more fresh in people's minds and in history's books.

I think that the Holocaust shouldn't be forgotten and every year on Yom Hashoah (Holocaust remembrance day), there should be a celebration and a nat'l holiday. That's the only time there should be a big emphasis on the Holocaust. As of now/any other day, it should be what's going on today and deciding about what to do with Iran.

In regards to the Holocaust being compared to slavery, that's total BS. The Holocaust was much more worse than slavery in the US. Slaves were brought over to the US to work with no pay. These are the African Americans. Don't forget about the Irish/other cultures who were enslaved up north in factories. Slavery is wrong. On the Holocaust part, Jews were enslaved but one screw up and were sent to the camps. The Holocaust was mostly a genocide of people who weren't Aryans (mostly Jews were killed and were the target). The Nazis took over countries and wiped out Jews/other non-Aryans because Hitler hated them. He just wanted them killed. Slavery in the US is totally different from the Holocaust.
